The United States suffered a loss yesterday when John McCain, acclaimed across the political spectrum as an American hero, passed away. Senator McCain’s larger-than-life essence was as complex as it was inspiring; often unintimidated by pressure to conform, he frequently stood firm on his values. We particularly appreciate and honor his persistence in the expression of respect for others regardless of political differences.
His grace in defeat was a model for all of us during the chaotic and tempestuous times we live in, as was his need to defend those under attack by hateful ignorance. We activist Democrats disagreed with his politics more than we agreed, but we salute him as we mourn the loss of dignity and courage that passes with him.
