Textbanking with IndivisiText + Hustle

October 31 Update: Indivisible, the group behind IndivisiText, is launching a big Get Out The Vote (GOTV) texting effort for this weekend, Friday Nov 2 to Sunday Nov 4. You can signup to join this campaign here: https://act.indivisible.org/signup/phonebank-texting-volunteer/. (be sure to check the “I’m interested in textbanking” box)

When you signup, you are asked to review the training material and complete the quiz (yes, again, but you should have it memorized by now). You are then sent an email that confirms your reservation for the day you selected (you can later request workflows for subsequent days as well). Workflows should appear in your Hustle app or webpage just like they do when you request workflows through the normal IndivisiText process.

I suggest you signup for this GOTV texting TODAY so your place is reserved for participating in this vitally important final-weekend GOTV textbanking effort! — Steve

Indivisible435 is associated with Indivisible Project, the organization behind the Indivisible Guide, and Indivisible Action, a “hybrid” PAC that sponsors a variety of grassroots activities. Indivisible435 supports phonebanking, canvassing, and textbanking activities for Democratic candidates and events across the country. Its textbanking effort is called IndivisiText. Like Resistance Labs, IndivisiText uses Hustle as its texting app.

To get started with IndivisiText and Hustle, follow this step-by-step guide.

Where to find texting opportunities with IndivisiText and Hustle:

  • All IndivisiText/Hustle campaigns are listed (and updated) daily on a Campaign Tracker, available here: IndivisiText Hustle Campaigns by Day. Click on the long link in cell B6 to go to the “Shift Tracker” showing workflows open today.
  • To join a workflow, note its channel name (e.g., #ga-abrams-open), return to the IndivisiText Team workspace on Slack, join the channel associated with that workflow (for instructions for doing this, see Step #7 below), request texts for that shift, read up on the candidate or event, and wait for your assignment. Return to your Hustle Workflow tab and your new workflow should be listed there. Start texting!

To get started with IndivisiText and Hustle, follow these steps:

    1. Begin by filling out the IndivisiText Team Signup Form here: https://indivisible435.org/join-the-indivisitext-team/. Fill in all the information and be sure to check the box at the bottom about whether you’ve used Hustle or Relay Click the “Submit” button.
    2. You are taken to a “Thanks for signing up!” page. Here you’re asked to sign up for the IndivisiText Slack workspace by following this link: Sign up for the IndivisiText Team Slack channel.
      1. You are taken to a Slack page to “Join the Slack workspace IndivisiText Team.” Enter your email and click the “Verify email” button.
      2. You will receive an email with the subject line “Confirm your email to join IndivisiText Team.” If it hasn’t shown up fairly quickly, check your spam folder to see if it ended up there.
      3. Open this email and click on “Confirm Email” to enter the Slack chatroom.
      4. You are taken to the IndivisiText Slack workspace with the #welcome channel selected.
    3. At the bottom of the message stream on this Slack page, you will see a text from “GreetBot” addressed to you. It asks you to do three things:
      1. Read the texting training guide located here: IndivisiText Team Training Guide.
      2. Take a short quiz based on the Training Guide, here: https://indivisible435.org/indivisitext-team-quiz.
      3. To start a workflow, you need to check back in to the IndivisiText Slack workspace #welcome channel 30 minutes before your shift begins to get materials on who you’ll be texting for.
    4. Following successful completion of the quiz (step 3b), you will receive an email welcoming you to the IndivisiText Team. The email described your next steps.
      1. Log in to Slack, go to the IndivisiText Team workspace, and post in the #welcome channel that you’ve completed the quiz.
      2. If you do not already have an active Hustle account, enter a request in the message box at the bottom of the #welcome channel to send you a Hustle “token” (a unique security code). Soon, a message will be texted to your phone (the cell phone number you entered on the signup form) that will allow you to signup for Hustle. To complete the Hustle signup process, follow the steps in #5 below.
      3. Once you are signed up with Hustle, you can use the Hustle web app on your computer. Just open your browser and go to this link: https://web.hustle.life/signup. You’re now ready to use Hustle when your shift begins.
      4. If you’ve used Hustle before, you might not receive a token because you’re already verified in the Hustle system. Don’t worry – just make sure you’ve downloaded the Hustle app, and check that your login still works.
    5. Steps for downloading and activating Hustle on your cell phone:
      1. After completing the quiz (Step 3b above) and posting to the #welcome channel that you have done so (Step 4a), request a text message with the token/security code for your personal Hustle app (Step 4b). When you receive the text message, click on the attached token link.
      2. You will be taken to a screen with some info already filled in. Click the “Verify” button.
      3. You will be taken to another screen where you enter a password (twice) for your Hustle app (password must be at least 8 characters long and contain at least one capital letter). Click the “Sign Up” button.
      4. You are then directed to the appropriate App Store (Apple iOS or Google Android) to download the Hustle app to your phone.
      5. Open the Hustle app (either on your phone or by going to https://web.hustle.life/login on your computer) and sign in with your email address and the password you just created.
      6. Go to the Workflow tab to see what workflows are available to you (at this point there probably will be none).
    6. To sign up for your first IndivisiText workflow, check out their campaign tracker, available here: IndivisiText Hustle Campaigns by Day. Note the name of the channel for the candidate you want to text for (e.g., #ga-abrams-open).
    7. Return to the IndivisiText Team workspace #welcome channel. Here is how to join a new channel:
      1. In the purple area on the left of the page, click on the “Channels” label above all the currently listed channels. This will open a new page, titled “Browse Channels.”
      2. Start typing the name of the new channel you want to join in the search box and the list will shrink to only matching channels. Click on the channel you want to join.
      3. You will be taken back to that channel on the main Slack page. There will be a little green box at the bottom asking if you want to join this channel. Click on that “Join channel” button and you are joined up.
      4. Now you can request texts by leaving a message in that channel (this step still requires a moderator to send you a workflow, so there may be a delay if they are busy).
    8. Return to your Hustle app (either on your phone or computer), go to the Workflow tab, click on your new workflow, and begin texting.
