Textbanking with Open Progress + Knock

Open Progress calls its textbanking community Text Troop. It operates textbanking services for many candidates across the country and is considered one of the most comprehensive and best supported textbanking platforms. Open Progress works with texting app Knock to provide a robust and thorough texting experience for you, the voter, and the staff collecting all the data. Open Progress also requires you join the Open Progress Text Troop workspace on the messaging service Slack (you get invited as part of the sign-up process).

To get started with Open Progress and Knock, follow this step-by-step guide.

To get started with Open Progress and Knock, follow these steps:

  1. Before you begin, note that Open Progress recommends accessing Knock as a web app on your computer. It does not recommend doing Open Progress texting on your phone or tablet.
  2. In your browser, go to the Open Progress/Text Troop webpage at https://www.openprogress.com/text-troop/.
  3. Read “How to text with Open Progress Text Troop.” If you are not familiar with Slack, watch the video under Step 1: “click here to watch video introduction to Slack.” Scroll through the “Open Progress Text Calendar” to see dates and times of available workflows.
  4. Click on the “Start Texting Now” button to get approved and registered for the Text Troop Slack Community.
  5. You’ll be taken to a Slack page to get an account for the Open Progress Text Troop Enter your email to receive a verification reply from Slack.
  6. Check your email, find the verification message, and click on the enclosed link.
  7. If you do not already have a Slack account, you must create a new password-protected account using your email as id.
  8. You are then taken to the Open Progress Text Troop Slack workspace. The “#general” channel will be selected (in the menu on the left of the screen) and you will see a welcome message addressed to you at the bottom of the message list.
  9. You will see a message addressed to you (your Slack “display name”) that asks you to review a quick training slideshow, with a link to the training at https://bit.ly/intro_op_texting.
  10. Additional training materials for the Knock app are available in video or text form and can be accessed at https://bit.ly/op-get-started-knock.
  11. You are then asked to enter “hi” or “hello” (no quotes) in the message box at the bottom of the message stream for the #general channel.
  12. After asking you if you read the training materials (say yes!), a moderator will activate your access to a new channel, text-here, which will appear among the channels listed on the left side of your Open Progress Slack screen. This is where you can ask for and receive advice from members of the Open Progress texting team.
  13. Once you have completed the training and have been given access to the text-here channel, you are ready to get connected to Knock and your first workflow. But there’s a few more steps!
  14. Select the “KnockBot” app at the bottom of the left menu and enter “login” (no quotes) in the message box at the bottom of the screen.
  15. Click on the link provided in the automatic reply and you are taken to a form to update your Knock profile. Enter the requested information and click Update.
  16. You are then taken to your Knock home page. On your first visit to this page, you will see a series of dialog boxes that explain the various areas and functions of the Knock application. Read each one and then click its Next button. After reading all the dialogues, you are ready to select a workflow from the list in the top left “PROGRAMS” section of the Knock screen.
  17. After selecting a workflow, click on the small “i” in a circle at the top right of the screen, next to your name. This will give you access to additional information about this candidate and campaign, called the Candidate Information Library (CIL). Make sure you are familiar with this information, including the type of campaign (engagement, persuasion, etc.) before continuing.
  18. To get a batch of voters to text for that workflow, click on the bright green Request More button under “CONVERSATIONS” on the left side of the screen. Your batch of voters will appear below the “CONVERSATIONS” section. Initially, you will be given small batches. As you get more experienced, Open Progress will send you larger batches. Your first recipient will appear in the middle section of the page and your initial text message will be filled in for you in the message area at the bottom of the page.
  19. You can begin texting by hitting the blue “send” button. After sending to each recipient, the next recipient will be automatically loaded into the central area.
  20. After sending your initial text messages to all your recipients, you will start receiving replies. For guidance on how to respond to replies (a very important part of textbanking!) check out the Knock training materials, especially the “Replying to Texts” video, on the Open Progress Getting Started with Knock page.
