Textbanking with Red2Blue + Relay

Red2Blue is a grassroots group that connects volunteers to progressive campaigns across the country. It provides a full range of activities from canvassing to phonebanking, postcarding, fundraising, textbanking, and more. Its texting program supports numerous Democratic candidate in the current midterm cycle using its texting app, Relay. Red2Blue is currently running textbanks for Democratic candidates in several states, including NY, PA, OH, MI and CA.

Where to find texting opportunities with Red2Blue and Relay:

  • Check out the Campaign Dashboard to see current and upcoming texting activities. (In the Red2Blue workspace on Slack, this link is located at the top of the page in the #texting)
  • The activist website Flippable is another good place to find textbanks that use Red2Blue and Relay for candidate texting.
  • You begin texting for a candidate by scanning the Campaign Dashboard and selecting a candidate’s Candidate Guide. After reviewing the Guide and following all the instructions in the yellow introductory section, return to the #texting channel in the Red2Blue workspace on Slack and request texts (100, 500, etc.) for your candidate.
  • On your Relay page, you can access each of the candidates you have been assigned by using the drop down menu under your name in the top right corner of the page.

To get started with Red2Blue and Relay, follow these steps:

  1. Begin by reading about Red2Blue texting here: https://red2blue.org/texting/.
  2. To sign up for texting, click on the “click here” link in the first line of the last paragraph. This will take you to the “Texting for Democrats” signup form. Here you will see a list of candidates and campaigns for whom Red2Blue is doing textbanking. The list will change over time.
  3. To text for any of the listed candidates, fill in the required information: email, name, cell phone, where you heard about Red2Blue texting, and whether you would like to become a texting lead. Click the “Submit” button.
  4. On the next page, you are invited to join the Red2Blue texting workspace on Slack at https://bit.ly/R2BSlack.
  5. This takes you to the Red2Blue workspace invitation page. Enter your email address and click the “Verify account” button.
  6. Go to your email, find the verification message, and click on the “Confirm Email” button.
  7. This will take you to the “Join the Slack workgroup Red2Blue” signup page. Enter the required information, including a password for this workspace. Click the “Next” button.
  8. You arrive at another Slack page where you agree to Slack’s Terms of Service. Click on the “I Agree” button.
  9. This takes you to another Slack page that offers to show you a Slack tutorial. You can take the tutorial or click on the “skip the tutorial” link at the bottom of the page.
  10. Finally, you arrive at the Red2Blue Slack workspace, here: https://red2blue-elections.slack.com/.
  11. Select the #general channel and you will see an automatic welcome message from “GreetBot.” To join the #texting channel, click on the blue #texting link in the message.
  12. You are taken to the #texting channel, which now appears in your Channels menu on the left of the screen. Click on the “Join Channel” button at the bottom of the screen.
  13. Eventually, you will receive a message here from Anna Brackett, who will provide you with next steps (you can also see this message by clicking on Anna’s replies to other new texters).
  14. Next step is to review the Red2Blue Texting Training Slideshow at https://bit.ly/R2B-texting-training. This includes training introductions for the Red2Blue Slack workspace, the Red2Blue Candidate Guides, and the Relay texting app.
  15. Return to the Slack #texting Click on the Campaign Dashboard link at the top of the page for this channel (where it says DASHBOARD in all caps) to see what texting opportunities are available.
  16. This takes you to a Google Sheet where all current and upcoming texting workflows are listed. (Note that there are two tabs – “Dashboard” and “Replies Only – Candidate Guides.”)
  17. On the “Dashboard” tab, find a candidate you want to text for. Check the “Status” column to make sure texting is currently available for this candidate (Status = Open or Coming Soon or Replies Only).
  18. Click on the Candidate Guide link for this candidate. A Google Doc will open in a new tab. The Candidate Guide is a structured document that provides all the information and instructions you will need to text for this candidate.
  19. Follow the “Texter Instructions” in the yellow box on the first page of the Candidate Guide.
    1. If you haven’t done so yet, review the Red2Blue Texting Training Slideshow.
    2. Read the Texting Script for your candidate. This is a separate Google Doc, available as a Quick Link at the top of the Candidate Guide.
    3. Review the full Candidate Guide.
  20. Now you are ready to join the Relay texting app.
    (Note: Red2Blue sometimes uses different texting apps, depending on campaign preferences. This will be covered in the Candidate Guide if applicable to your selected candidate.)

    1. Click on the “JOIN RELAY” link in the Texter Instructions. This is a customized link specifically for this candidate, so you need to access it here.
    2. You will be taken to a login page for Relay.
    3. On the login page, if you already have a Relay account, sign in with your email address and a password. If this is your first visit to Relay, click on the “sign up instead” link at the top of the page.
    4. On the Sign Up page, enter the required information and click the “Sign Up” button.
    5. On the next page, click the “Accept” button. This takes you to a Relay Assignments page that includes assignments only for your candidate.
    6. If Assignments are available at this time, they’ll be listed on this page. If not, you’ll see the message “No Active Assignments.”
  21. Are you ready to text? NOT QUITE YET!
  22. Return to your candidate’s Candidate Guide and continue following the Texter Instructions in the yellow box.
    1. Take the Texting Training Review quiz at https://bit.ly/R2BTrainingReview. Passing this quiz is necessary to qualify you for Red2Blue texting.
    2. Review the New Texter Guide (this will open another Google Doc). This step is optional, but it can be very helpful to keep it open while you text for tips, things to remember, and everything else you need to become a Pro Texter.
  23. To get an assignment for your selected candidate, return to the #texting channel in Slack and post a message saying you are ready to text for this candidate. Include how many texts you want to send (100, 200, 500, etc.).
  24. When an assignment is available, you will receive a notification from an administrator on the Red2Blue #texting Slack channel, replying to your post and releasing the number of texts you requested.
  25. Return to Relay and text away!
